If you’ve spent any time in the online space you have probably heard the term email marketing and email list multiple times over. That’s because email marketing should be a key component if not one of the biggest components in your overall marketing strategy and even more so as an Interior Designer.
In this post, we are going to chat through the whys and the hows that you as an interior designer should be incorporating email marketing into your content plan.
We all know that Instagram is undoubtedly one of the most popular social media platforms for Interior Designers and where so many firms put their focus and efforts and rightfully so, but what happens when those platforms go down, what happens when your account gets hacked, blocked or heaven-forbid deleted? All of that hard work and energy can be gone in the blink of an eye. Ok, now not to be a total downer but the reality is you don’t own your followers on Instagram and unfortunately are not in control of what happens to them if IG decides to shut the virtual doors.
Enter the life-saving email list!
Don’t get me wrong, I do fully believe that you need to be on Instagram and put energy there but if you are not building an email list and using email marketing in your design business I want to encourage you today to start thinking about incorporating this into your strategy. When you build an email list you have a direct way of communicating with your most loyal and trusted followers and customers through email. You have a way of notifying them at a moment’s notice of recent project reveals, upcoming events, new product launches, your expertise, and why they should hire you, the possibilities are endless.
Oftentimes social media can feel like you are shouting from the rooftops but no one is listening or there’s so much noise that no one can hear you. With email marketing, you are now speaking to attentive ears that want to hear from you and what you have to say.
So you’re probably thinking “okay that all sounds great but how do you get people onto an email list?” There are a few different ways to do this but the most popular one and I’m sure you’ve come across it every day online, and that is through something called an opt-in or lead magnet. Essentially it’s a value-driven resource that a potential client or follower would get in exchange for providing you their email address.
Some ideas include:
A PDF Checklist
A discount or promo code for free shipping ( if you have a shop/products)
A Guide ( white paint guide, furniture placement guide, lighting guide, how to measure your room for furniture placement…)
You get the general idea – what would you consider to be valuable information you could provide that will, in turn, help someone solve a problem or make a design decision easier? You want it to be something people will say yes welcome to my inbox for.
Email list building can be so beneficial for your business and what most business owners wish they had started doing sooner. If you have plans to scale, launch an e-commerce shop down the line, taking the time to build up your email list and nurturing that list will only pay off when you venture into these new branches of your business.
If you are ready to start building your list the first step is to decide on a service provider. You will need an email marketing platform in order to do this efficiently and it can be easy to get overwhelmed with all the different options out there. It’s best to pick a couple to research and see if they fit your needs.
My recommendation because I just LOVE it so much is Flodesk, it makes getting started with email marketing simple and beautiful. The email templates they have are gorgeous and easily customizable to suit your aesthetic. If you want to give it a try make sure to click HERE to get 50% off your subscription!!
This is just the beginning so make sure to stay tuned for my next post where I will be going into more detail on the next steps to take on your list-building journey.
